Winter 2007 Student Group Beneficiaries

Campus Kitchens at Northwestern University is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to developing creative and effective solutions to hunger and education deficiencies in the greater Evanston area. By collecting excess food (that’s still safe to serve!) from local restaurants and on-campus dining facilities, they are able to provide 50,000 free and healthy meals each year to those in need. They then pair these meals with a range of educational programming, spanning from tutoring and mentoring to college preparation and culinary job training.

Chinese Students Association promotes the awareness of Chinese culture on campus and elsewhere while encouraging a social environment for students of all backgrounds. Furthermore, CSA strives to bring service to their community. Their events are geared towards bringing together the Asian community while sharing our culture with others. Some annual events include: Celebrasia, bowling nights, dances, dinner parties, and hosting famous guest speakers.”

College Democrats seek to stimulate political thought and activity at Northwestern, to promote interest in governmental affairs, and to advance the ideals and principles of the Democratic Party of the United States. They strive to accomplish this by bringing engaging speakers to campus, assisting members with finding political experiences, and by hosting interesting quarterly events.

Dance Marathon's mission is “to unite Northwestern University’s campus, the Evanston and greater Chicagoland communities, in philanthropic fundraising and education.” Each year they plan and host the nation-famous thirty hour Dance Marathon. This year proceeds benefit CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy Foundation and the Evanston Community Foundation.

Dolphin Show is the nation’s largest student produced musical and is one of the largest student organizations at Northwestern University. This year’s Dolphin Show is Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

HALO is dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS related issues on campus and to fighting the global pandemic that is HIV/AIDS. Through educational outreach, volunteerism, and social activism, HALO strives to educate their peers about HIV/AIDS and to promote safer sex practices.

Muslim Cultural Students Association (McSA) is a community based organization that works to increase awareness of Islamic culture at Northwestern University and to provide an Islamic environment for Muslim students. McSA presents Islamic heritage and provides a forum for discussion among NU students in order to promote understanding; fosters unity among the McSA and other NU student organizations, faculty, and administration; and promotes the human values that Islam emphasizes: community, equality, justice, mercy, compassion, and peace.

National Student Partnerships (NSP) is the nation’s only year-round, student-led volunteer service organization that links people in need with the resources and opportunities they need to become self-sufficient professionally and financially. The group is about fifty students strong, and each member commits to three hours of volunteering per week. Each student works one-on-one with low-income community members, providing assistance with writing resumes, conducting job searches, locating housing, applying for public benefits, filing taxes, and finding social services in the area. NSP volunteers work towards empowering clients to reach independence by creating community partnerships and building strong relationships with the community and its members.

Northwestern Community Development Corps (NCDC) seeks to engage students in community development at Northwestern, in Evanston, and throughout Chicago. They promote civic engagement through direct service, social awareness, and advocacy. Utilizing existing skills, talents, and abilities, NCDC strives to build mutually beneficial relationships, enriching both the Northwestern campus and outside communities, while forming a foundation for the future.

NU Sailing Team is a competitive club which participates in regattas of the Midwestern Collegiate Sailing Association as well as a few non-affiliated regattas each season. Their goal is to get out and be competitive at as many regattas as possible. (They have gone to UW Madison, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Team Racing Championships in CA, and many others in the past). They are completely student run program and sail out of the NU sailing center (on campus).

OASIS is a student volunteer group that supports various charitable organizations and hosts quarterly outreach days. One of the primary organizations that they assist is the Ronald McDonald House, which provides care and support for families of seriously ill children. Using OASIS funds, volunteers regularly bring baking or cooking supplies to cook with and/or for the child patients and their families of Children’s Memorial Hospital.

PARS, or Persian American Representative of Students, is devoted to raising awareness of Persian culture and creating a comfortable environment for Persians on campus. PARS puts on events that highlight several aspects of Persian culture, such as the Persian new year.

Purple Crayon Players is a performance and community service group that strives to produce quality theatre for young audience, both for the Northwester community and for the Chicagoland area. In addition, Purple Crayon Players recognized that theatre is an effective medium for education and endeavors to use art as an educational tool. So far, they have currently held one production, Egibizo the Spirit Child, and are working hard to fund another production later this year.

Rainbow Alliance works to create a safe space and to encourage personal development for people of all genders and sexualities, perceived or otherwise. Rainbow Alliance puts on programming like the Drag Show, National Coming Out Day events and activities, queer themed plays, and educational speakers.

South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) strives to represent and promote South Asian culture on the Northwestern Campus by hosting social, educational, and outreach activities. The group has approximately 600 members of which 300 are active.

Special Olympics provides educational and athletic opportunities for Northwestern students and Illinois athletes with physical and mental disabilities. Over 100 student volunteers, coaches, and committee members are involved in Special O.

Sit and Spin Productions is an exciting and ever-expanding student theatre group dedicated to bringing dynamic and unusual performances to new people and new places in the Northwestern community.

Undertones is an a cappella singing group that is dedicated to performing dynamic and entertaining music on the Northwestern campus as well as to improving musical awareness in the outside community. They are currently in the midst of producing their second CD, and they plan to compete in the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella in February or March. They also hope to start an outreach program with local high school groups.

WAVE Productions is a self-supporting, non-profit student theatre company that operates primarily on the Northwestern University Evanston campus. WAVE Productions exists to share the stories of the past and to present in order to open the door to a better future.
